The old wall of the Botto Machado Garden near Flea Market Square (Campo de Santa Clara) is now the scene of a large mural of hand-painted tiles by the Portuguese-French artist André Saraiva. Saraiva began his career in the 1980s painting graffiti in the streets of Paris.

Known also as Mr. A, the "alter ego" with which he tagged windows, subway stations, mailboxes and vacant buildings of European cities, André Saraiva has work - installations, paintings, screen printings and even short films - featured in museums and galleries around the world, from Paris to Los Angeles. Nonetheless, this is the first time that the artist (who is also the owner of the Le Baron night clubs in London, New York, Tokyo and Paris) has ventured into the Portuguese art of tile work.

The broad strokes characteristic of graffiti art are indeed very present in this monumental, 188 meter long mural, with an area of approximately 1000 sq. meters. Manufactured in the Viúva Lamego Ceramics Factory using traditional techniques and methods and there hand-painted by the artist, the work emerged as a single piece consisting of 52,738 tiles, well worth seeing on site.
The panel is an initiative of the Lisbon City Council and the São Vicente Parish Council and was promoted by the Museum of Design and Fashion (MUDE).
