Castelo de São Jorge

National monument, the Castle of São Jorge is one of Lisbon’s symbols. The original fortification was built by the Muslims in the mid-eleventh century, and taken by D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, in 1147. Transformed into a royal palace in the thirteenth century, it served the court until the sixteenth century. Still preserves 11 towers, from which the Watchtower stands out. It has a permanent exhibition, with a vast archaeological collection, gardens and several viewpoints. It is, beyond doubt, the ideal place to see Lisbon from above, thanks to its extraordinary location. It also plays host to a wide cultural agenda, serving as backdrop for plays, dance performances, family games and several medieval recreations.
