Igreja e Museu do Santo António

Near the Lisbon Cathedral, this church was built in the place where it is said Saint Anthony was born and lived (b. 1191 in Lisbon, d. 1231 in Padua). It is there where we can make a special request to the Saint in exchange for a coin, hence the floor covered with "St. Anthony alms".  Fernando de Bulhões, later St. Anthony, is revered since the thirteenth century as a miracle worker, wedding protector, founder of lost objects and lawyer for the Souls in Purgatory. The figure of the saint is an icon of Lisbon.

Recently expanded, the museum is part of the Museu de Lisboa (a multi-branched museum, in which Lisbon and its stories reveal themselves under different perspectives) and presents Saint Anthony to us, highlighting his relationship with Lisbon, the city where he was born and lived until he was 20 years old.

This site has a long-term exhibition and a documentation centre.
