Jardim das Amoreiras

The Marcelino Mesquita Garden (playwright, poet and writer) is best known as the Garden of Amoreiras. The name derives from the abundance of this species in this garden. It was planted in 1771, at the behest of the Marquis of Pombal, with 331 mulberry trees with the intention of promoting the Portuguese silks industry. Today is a quiet garden district, with a playground, kiosk and terrace, surrounded by eighteenth-century houses, the Arpad Szènes-Vieira da Silva Museum (who occupies the former silk factory), The Baroque Water Reservoir of Amoreiras and the Chapel of Our Lady of Montserrat, built beneath the Aqueduct arcades.
