This stunning tribute to the golden Age of Discoveries was commissioned by King D. Manuel I in order to celebrate the success of Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. Funded with the profits of the spice trade it was inaugurated in 1601. Here are the tombs of King D. Manuel I, King D. João III and Cardinal Henry, as well as the poet Luis de Camões and Vasco da Gama. In 1983, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
