Palácio Nacional da Pena

The Pena National Palace was considered the most beautiful "castle" in Europe by the European Best Destinations Tourism Organization. Built in the hills of Sintra, 500 meters above sea level, is the result of the creative genius of King D. Ferdinando II. Inspired in the castles of Bavaria it became the maximum reference of Romanticism in Portugal. With an eccentric and fanciful architecture it has several notes of Moorish and Manueline influence. The Palace, summer residence of the Portuguese royal family between 1838 and 1910, was built to be seen from anywhere in the park, the forest or the lush gardens, with over five hundred species of trees coming from the four corners of the world. It is a House-Museu since 1920 and in 2007 was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
