The Palace of Mafra is the most important Baroque monument in Portugal. The monumental work was built by King D. João V to give graces for the birth of an heir to the throne. Built in limestone stone from the region, the building has 37,790 m2 divided into 1200 rooms, more than 4700 doors and windows, 156 staircases, 29 courtyards and halls, including one of the richest libraries in Europe. Such magnificence was only possible due to the gold of Brazil, which allowed King D. João V to govern absolute, spending considerable sums on construction projects to demonstrate the wealth of the kingdom.
